Indian Education System: New Cover on Same Old Book

Final Exams are over now and it’s the time of relaxation for students and work for their sandwiches between the bundles of answers sheets and report card. With the new system of marking and studies introduces by CBSE this time of the year is tougher than the earlier one. From the adaptation from western pattern of studies, with the marks turning into grades the clearing the examination seems easier to clear then before. With the emphasis is more on practical knowledge and learning, the new system seems brighter than it actually is. As far as the students and the teachers are concerned nothing has changed since yesterday, whether it is learning part or the teaching part. Teachers continue to finish the syllabus by any means and students continue to cram everything in order to chase the mad race for competition and percentage. And by the end of the year the teachers are given a test of their abilities by making and breaking of marks into the fanciest looking calculative index of s student’s progress, which is neither read nor followed by either students or heir parents. What matters is the two words “passed and promoted”, which is simpler to understand and followed. In a country where one-third of people are still illiterate with a equal number unemployed, the new way of calculating only adds to the complexity and confusion of both teachers and students of the new age Indian who are up for adding up degrees to their resume without adding knowledge and expertise. The truth remains as old as before, behind this glam-new education system.
